Are We Committed to Sustainable Construction, or Just Talking About it?

Everyone in the construction sector cares about sustainability. They want to be eco-friendly and avert a climate crisis. Or at least they say they do. Do actions tell the same story?

Take a look at most construction sites and you’ll see that not much has changed significantly from 20 or more years ago. Except perhaps for the education sector, you’ll mostly see the same methods and materials but with slightly better insulation.

If the fundamental approach hasn’t changed, what’s really going on? Is it all just greenwashing where organisations have high-sounding sustainability goals but carry on much as before? Putting electric vehicles on your fleet and planting trees are good things to do but they won’t save the planet.

Greenwashing or a Different Approach?

If we want different sustainability outcomes – including carbon reduction across the entire lifecycle – we have to build differently. If you don’t change the approach you can only make a marginal difference to the result.

Why is Construction Still so Wasteful?

Over 30% of UK landfill waste is generated by construction and demolition. It’s estimated that 13% of the materials delivered to construction sites go straight to landfill rather than being used.

The construction sector is intent on doing something about those statistics and promoting a more circular economy for construction materials. But waste is hard to control through a traditional construction site when the pressure’s on to deliver on time.

A more reliable solution is to minimise waste through a modern manufacturing process and ship nothing to the site that isn’t needed. Again, it’s changing the approach to make sure you achieve a better outcome.
