A Heatwave Needn’t Melt the Offsite Homes Market

MPs on the Environment Audit Committee have raised concerns over the ability of modular homes to withstand the recent heatwave temperatures. Their thinking was that as their construction lacks thermal mass they warm up very quickly.

They identify that the potential solution to this issue is to select suitable materials to create more thermally efficient homes; one option is to use concrete. But there are problems with this solution for structural based modular homes construction- traditional poured concrete is heavy and slow to work with.

These limitations normally make it unsuitable for this style of construction. But Innovaré has come up with a unique composite solution. It uses precast lightweight concrete flooring combined with their panelised system. The solution delivers the appropriate thermal mass to overcome the problem of the buildings overheating, but does not compromise the structural integrity or speed of construction.

Precast is much faster to work with than traditional poured concrete. The precast sections are made to order and delivered and installed on-site. Disruption is also reduced by removing the need for mixing lorries and labour on site. And there’s no need to delay installing walls while the concrete sets.

Concerns about overheating buildings needn’t slow the move towards modern methods for those looking to benefit from the speed, flexibility and energy efficiency of manufactured construction. The issue of extreme weather creating rapid heat build up can be managed fairly easily. Although, based on the fact that last time we were affected for any length of time was 1976, it will be 2060 before we need to worry about it again.

Whatever temperature extremes you need to design for these can be can be resolved with Innovaré’s composite SIP and pre-cast concrete solution. Click here for more information or call us today on 0845 674 0020.
